When Susan Hill penned the story in 1983, she could never have expected its West End success. Stephen Mallatratt adapted the ghost story for a Christmas season at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in 1987 before transferring to London’s Lyric Hammersmith in 1989.

What is The Woman in Black play about?

When solicitor Arthur Kipps is sent to the remote town of Crythin Gifford to attend the funeral of a client, he doesn't expect to see a mysterious woman dressed in black. As he sorts his client’s papers, he visits her late estate, Eel Marsh House, to uncover what happened. In order to cure his nightmares, Kipps enlists the assistance of an unsuspecting actor to reenact the unsettling things he witnessed.
