A haunting, theatrical, and utterly unique piece of theatre, Dana H. is a riveting new play and a tour de force for its performer, Deirdre O’Connell, one of New York City’s most sought-after and enduring stage actresses. Book Dana H. tickets on London Theatre.
O’Connell won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her recent Broadway run as Dana H., playwright Lucas Hnath’s mother, Dana Higginbotham. In this absorbing, one-act drama, O’Connell acts as Higginbotham, a psych ward chaplain, and precisely lip-syncs to an audio track of Higginbotham describing a harrowing period of her adulthood in which she was abducted for five months, held captive by an unwell man in a series of Florida motels.
Acting as the vessel for Higginbotham, who shares her stories in her own candid words, O’Connell meticulously recreates this life chapter for audiences, captivating them with small gestures and enormous emotions filtered through years of reflection and compassion.
Given the interview-style nature of the play, sound is integral. This production features a richly crafted soundscape by Mikhail Fiksel, who won the Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Play for his work on Dana H. The Goodman Theatre, Center Theatre Group, and Vineyard Theatre production comes to the Royal Court this winter in a production staged by former Royal Court Associate Director Les Waters.
In a career-defining performance, O’Donnell now brings her acclaimed role in her London stage debut. In a five-star review for Time Out New York wrote, ‘Deirdre O’Connell gives a stunning performance in this unforgettable true-crime tale.’ Raving further, The New York Times wrote that the play Dana H. is ‘an astonishing feat. Deirdre O’Connell brilliantly pulls off one of the most difficult challenges ever asked of an actor.'
