Tinuke Craig directs the world premiere of Diana Nneka Atuona’s searing post-World War Two play at the Donmar Warehouse.
Set in the multicultural Cardiff neighbourhood, follow the residents and newcomers as they continue to adjust in an everchanging world. The Trouble in Butetown play shines a light on the experiences of living in a marginalised community, and the struggles of living in a new, urban environment.
Meet Gwyneth, she’s a boarding house owner. Trouble is, it’s an illegal boarding house, and if she’s caught, her life’s upended. Then there’s Nate, an African American GI. Escaping his barracks, he tries to find a safe haven in Tiger Bay. But there’s trouble on every corner. Who should he trust?
Trouble in Butetown is the second play from the Alfred Fagon-winning playwright, Diana Nneka Atuona. Her debut play Liberian Girl followed a teenager's story of survival. Trouble in Butetown London performances continues this theme, now revolving around mid 20th-century stories.
Butetown, also known as the Docks, is a district in the south of Cardiff. The “Tiger Bay” area became known as one of the UK’s first multicultural comminutes, with settlers from over 50 countries living there. During World War Two, authorities attempted to ban African American G.I’s from mixing with the community; local workers did not comply.
