About A Streetcar Named Desire

Rebecca Frecknall directs Paul Mescal and Patsy Ferran in a fiery revival of Tennessee Williams’s masterpiece at the Phoenix Theatre.

There’s no stopping the Almeida’s associate director. Fresh from directing Tennessee Williams’s Summer and Smoke at the Off-West End address, she returned to the same location for the searing American drama. She even reunited with Patsy Ferran, who took on the role of Blanche just four days before the first performance, after Lydia Wilson was forced to withdraw.

A Streetcar Named Desire in London puts Paul Mescal on the West End map. The Normal People and Aftersun actor portrays Stanley with, according to The Telegraph, “glints of muscular fixity and a mindset of suppressed fury.” Mescal and Ferran reprise the roles of Stanley and Blanche, alongside Anjana Vasan as Stella, for a seven-week West End transfer.

Tennessee Williams's New Orleans-based drama was the American playwright's favourite. It earned him a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was later adapted into a film, led by Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando.

A Streetcar Named Desire won three Oliviers: Best Revival, Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Anjana Vasan,) Best Actor (Paul Mescal). The show received a further three nominations: Best Actress (Patsy Ferran,) Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall,) Best Lighting Design (Lee Curran.)

What’s A Streetcar Named Desire about?

Southern belle Blanche DuBois once had it all. After a spate of personal losses and tragedies, she’s left with no money. The only place she can stay is at her sister Stella’s New Orleans French Quarter apartment. With Stella’s husband Stanley in close proximity, plenty of violent realities and illusions collide. Can Blanche rely on the kindness of strangers?
