About Glory Ride

How did Gino Bartali become “Gino the Pious”? Learn the secrets behind Bartali’s Italian cycling adventures and how he saved thousands of lives in the process. Glory Ride tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Italian cyclist Gino Bartali led a secret life. With his cycling career as a cover, he pedalled thousands of miles across the country, all to save others. Look closer at his bike, and you’ll see false identity cards and other secret documents. Bartali gave the identities to child refugees, and persecuted adults who needed to escape Benito Mussolini. The Glory Ride musical tells a compassionate story of bravery, loyalty, and doing the right thing — no matter how tough it is.

Come From Away choreographer Kelly Devine directs Victoria and Todd Buchholz’s Glory Ride in London. After workshop performances at The Other Palace, the musical opens at the Charing Cross Theatre. It’s a heartwarming tale that showcases the best of humanity.

Who was Gino Bartali?

Gino Bartali was a multi-award-winning cyclist. He won the Giro d’Italia, Italy’s leading bicycle race, in 1936, 1937, and 1946. He followed this with a Tour de France win in 1938 and 1948. During World War Two, Bartali continued to ride his bike, escorting documents across Italy to allow victims and refugees to escape Mussolini’s regime. In September 2013, Yad Vashem recognised Gino Bartali as a “Righteous Among the Nations” for his efforts to help others in need.
