Jude Christian adapts and directs Shakespeare’s brutal tragedy, Titus Andronicus, at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the ideal location to stage such a gruesome tragedy. As the candles burn throughout the auditorium, audiences are plunged into the mind of rulers who’ll stop at nothing to be successful. In Titus Andronicus London performances, an all-female cast star, led by Katy Stephens as Titus and Kirsten Foster as Tamora.
Jude Christian’s previously worked on Shakespeare plays, including Othello Macbeth at Lyric Hammersmith. Titus Andronicus marks her debut with a text by the Bard at Shakespeare’s Globe. She’s joined by Liv Morris and George Heyworth — best known as the award-winning musical cabaret act Bourgeois and Maurice — who provide original music for the show.
Set after a 10-year battle, the Titus Andronicus play sees the Roman general embark on an era of bloodshed, as he refuses to show mercy to anyone in his way. Not only does Titus feel betrayed after prolonged fighting, he’s also on a mission for justice — can anyone stop him?
In Titus Andronicus, Tamora and her sons: Alarbus, Demetrius, and Chiron, are captured by Titus. By manipulating her sons and her lover, Aaron the Moor, Tamora is able to break Titus by getting revenge on the ruler.
