About But I'm A Cheerleader

After workshop performances, MTFest UK and performances at the Turbine Theatre, But I’m A Cheerleader returns to London. Join teenage cheer star Megan as she learns about herself in this cult and campy musical. But I'm A Cheerleader tickets are available on London Theatre.

But I’m A Cheerleader centres on Megan, an all-American high school cheerleader who seemingly has the perfect life. Everything is going swimmingly, until her friends and family grow convinced that she is a lesbian. To “cure” her sexuality, Megan is sent to ‘True Directions’, a rehabilitation camp to encourage her to become heterosexual. Life-changing revelations are discovered at camp though, and when Megan meets sexy tomboy Graham, Megan learns more about herself than she thought possible.

The But I’m A Cheerleader musical is based on the 1999 film of the same name, starring Natasha Lyonne. During the casting process for the But I’m A Cheerleader film, efforts were made to ensure a diverse cast. The film’s cast include RuPaul Charles, Dante Basco, Douglas Spain, and Clea DuVall.

But I’m A Cheerleader features work by a new musical pair — Bill Augustin and Andrew Abrams. The show premiered at MTFestUK in 2019, with performances staged at The Other Palace. After the pandemic, the musical moved to the Turbine Theatre for its first full-length engagement, playing at the Turbine Theatre in spring 2022. Now, audiences can give three cheers for the musical as it returns to the Turbine in autumn 2022.

The Battersea-based venue regularly welcomes new work. Previous shows include High Fidelity, and My Son's A Queer (But What Can You Do?) Who knows what the future of But I'm A Cheerleader will be?
