The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful musical that follows just two characters, Jamie and Cathy. Falling in and out of love over the course of five years, their stories are told in reverse chronology to one another. For Jamie, we meet him at the start of the relationship before things go sour. For Cathy, her story becomes a happier one as her life is told from the split to their first meeting. The two characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. But, they don't stay together for too long, and all too soon Jamie and Cathy just hold memories of one another.
The Last Five Years in London is an actor-musician production, meaning cast members play music throughout the show to accompany their musical performances. A four-piece band also play music, but if you're looking for an immersive musical experience, you'll want to see The Last Five Years.
Casting for The Last Five Years in London stars Molly Lynch as Cathy and Oli Higginson as Jamie. They both reprise their roles from the Southwark Playhouse productions, which both took place in 2020. In a five star review of The Last Five Years for LondonTheatre.co.uk, "this The Last Five Years is more than fine: for the first time in my experience of a much-produced show, the characters' giddiness and desolation, their rapture and heartache, propelled me tearily into the night."
The Last Five Years features an original book, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Jason Robert Brown is an award-winning American composer whose musical hits include Parade, 13, Songs for a New World and The Bridges of Madison County. For The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown won two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics. Perhaps unbelievably, The Last Five Years has never been on Broadway, but could 2021 change this?
Songs in The Last Five Years include "Still Hurting", sung by Cathy at the top of the show. Other standout musical numbers include "Moving Too Fast" and "A Summer in Ohio". The only song sung by both Cathy and Jamie is "A Miracle Would Happen/When You Come Home to Me", and it's when their characters meet for the first (and only) time in the show.
