The Secret Garden in London is a new play at Regents Park Open Air, written by 2019 Stage Debut Awards Best Writer nominee Holly Robinson (soft animals) and directed by Anna Himali Howard (Kabul Goes Pop, Graceland).
Based on the 1911 novel of the same name, The Secret Garden tells the tale of a young orphaned girl sent from India to Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle. Soon, she finds an abandoned garden and makes it her mission to revive it, making friends in the process.
“She’s a strange, neglected little girl who has had a really hard time, and she finds herself in this house full of grief…I have always been drawn to those strange or weird Victorian girls that nobody likes,” Robinson said.
The Secret Garden is a play with a talented cast including Theo Angel (Obsession, Casualty) as Colin, Richard Clews (The Taming of the Shrew, King Lear) as Ben Weatherstaff, George Fletcher (EastEnders) as Dr. Craven, Amanda Hadingue (A Very Expensive Poison) as Mrs. Medlock, Molly Hewitt-Richards (Island Song) as Martha, Jack Humphrey (Animal Farm, Othello) as Archibald Craven, Hannah Khalique-Brown (Barbie, Squad Goals) as Mary Lennox, and Brydie Service (Tequila Dream) as Dickon.
The classic story has been adapted into numerous creative works in addition to this play, including multiple films, a 1975 television series, and a very successful musical by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon. The musical premiered in 1991 on Broadway and ran for 709 shows, earning three Tony Awards. Since then, the musical has had numerous revivals, including the Royal Shakespeare Company version in 2000 and 2001, which broke box office records at the time.
