Timothée Chalamet will make his West End theatre debut alongside Eileen Atkins in a brand new production of Amy Herzog's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play 4000 Miles, opening at The Old Vic in London.
Herzog's play is set at the beginning of summer as 21-year-old Leo is setting off from the West Coast to cycle across the US with his best friend. After being disconnected for weeks, Leo turns up at his 91-year-old grandmother Vera's apartment in Manhattan in the middle of the night.
Vera is inspired by Herzog's own grandmother, Leepee, whose words, habits and history were used to fashion the character, who had initially appeared in the playwright's earlier work After the Revolution.
Timothée Chalamet is an Academy Award nominee for his role in Luca Guadagnino's drama Call Me By Your Name, which made Chalamet the third-youngest nominee in the best actor category ever. His other screen roles include Beautiful Boy, Lady Bird and the Netflix period drama The King.
Eileen Atkins returns to the Old Vic having first appeared at the theatre for a season in 1961, where she starred in Roots, Twelfth Night, Richard III and The Tempest. She is a three-time Olivier Award winner for her performances in The Unexpected Man, Honour, and a triple-bill of Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale and Mountain Language. Her most recent West End role was Florian Zeller's The Height of the Storm, which later transferred to Broadway.
The play will be directed by Old Vic artistic director Matthew Warchus, whose credits include Matilda the Musial, Ghost: the Musical, The Norman Conquests and David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow.
Playwright Herzog recently had her play Belleville staged at the Donmar Warehouse, but this Old Vic production will be the first time 4000 Miles has been staged in the UK.
