About John Gabriel Borkman

Simon Russell Beale stars as the title character in Henrik Ibsen’s masterpiece at the Bridge Theatre in autumn 2022. John Gabriel Borkman tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The John Gabriel Borkman play follows the eponymous entrepreneur and bank manager as he navigates a complicated career. At one point, Borkman was flying high, however his problematic decision making was eventually caught out. By speculating with his investors’ money, Borkman found himself serving a lengthy prison sentence for fraud. Even when he's in jail, Borkman dreams of making a grand comeback. That’s pretty difficult to achieve when you’re cooped up inside four walls though.

At the same time, Mrs. Borkman dreams of restoring the “Borkman” name and finding their former glory. That's easier said than done though, especially When her twin sister Ella Rentheim knocks on the door. The Borkmans find themselves arguing over their past and struggle to reconcile their differences.

Simon Russell Beale will play the title character in John Gabriel Borkman. The award-winning actor recently won his first Tony for The Lehman Trilogy on Broadway. However in recent years, Beale’s regularly performed at the Bridge Theatre, previously leading the Bach & Sons and A Christmas Carol companies. Now, he takes on another title role at the Bridge Theatre in autumn 2022.

Lucinda Coxon adapts the rarely-staged Henrik Ibsen play, John Gabriel Borkman, for the Bridge Theatre, in autumn 2022. John Gabriel Borkman was initially announced in 2019 for 2020 performances, but due to the pandemic, the show was cancelled by two years. Don't miss the long-awaited and highly-anticipated John Gabriel Borkman at the Bridge Theatre.

Intelligent, Great writing, Great acting

See it if You appreciate an exploration of human psychology and relationships from a master craftsman, enhanced by an excellent production.

Don’t see it if You're looking for a critique of capitalism. That's not at all what the play is about.

Masterful, Intimate, Great acting

See it if you're interesting in a lesser-known Ibsen play, that is still relevant, with the amazing Mr. Beale in the lead with 2 other fine actresses.

Don’t see it if you're expecting a big production or a fast-paced play, this one takes its time brewing and is beautifully directed as a small chamber piece

Intelligent, Intense, Great staging, Great acting, Ambitious

See it if you are a fan of great acting.I love Simon Russell Beale. He is brilliant in this.Set is excellent.Sadly the play itself is a tad dull.

Don’t see it if you voted for Trump or think he was wonderful. This play feels totally relevant, but Ibsen can be a bit much.

Masterful, Resonant, Must see, Great acting, Exquisite

See it if You like astonished by the acting skills, like Ipsen, wordy drama.

Don’t see it if You don't like slow developing one place drama.
