Be transported to Dublin circa 1922, shortly after the outbreak of the Irish Civil War in Sean O'Casey's classic comic tragedy, Juno and the Paycock. Book Juno and the Paycock tickets on London Theatre.
Juno and the Paycock in London stars Tony award-nominee J. Smith-Cameron (Our Country's Good, Succession) as the family matriarch, Juno Boyle and Olivier and Tony-winning actor Mark Rylance (Twelfth Night, Jerusalem) stars in the role of her husband, 'Captain' Jack Boyle.
“It is a joy to be playing Seán O’Casey’s masterpiece with J. Smith-Cameron, and to be doing so in its 100th anniversary year. I am also delighted to be reuniting with Matthew Warchus on what will be our seventh theatrical collaboration and with Sonia Friedman who has supported me in eight previous productions,” said Mark Rylance.
The talented cast tells the story of the Boyle family, who live in the Dublin tenements and struggle to make ends meet as the civil war rages on. Despite the family's financial struggles, the father, Jack Boyle, doesn't work and spends endless time and money at the pub. When the family receives an unexpected inheritance, will their financial struggles finally end? Throughout this black-humoured play, the tale of a mother's resilience in the face of immense struggles emerges.
The play has an exceptional creative team, including direction by Tony and Olivier award-winner Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical, Pride), set and costume design by Tony and Olivier award-winner Rob Howell (Matilda the Musical), and lighting design by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Hugh Vanstone (Matilda the Musical).
Juno and the Paycock is a play with a rich history; it was first staged in Dublin at the Abbey Theatre in 1924 and is the second in Sean O'Casey's Dublin Trilogy. The other two plays in the trilogy include The Shadow of a Gunman (1923) and The Plough and the Stars (1926).
